Grade 8 Final Vocab

3 OUTPUT DEVICES: printer, monitor, speaker

4 INPUT DEVICES: keyboard, mouse, scanner, touch screen

Bookmark: A URL that you save in your browser so all you have to do is click on the title to visit it again, a favorite.

Computer: machine that performs four functions: input, processing, storage, and output

Conditional statements: a statement that can be written in if-then form.

CPU: Central Processing Unit: the main component that performs all of the Processing, the computer's brain, also known as a microprocessor

Database: A collection of related information organized for rapid search and retrieval. Can look like a spreadsheet, but is usually larger.

Disk Drive: a device that reads data off a disk and/or writes data to a disk (hard or floppy)

Expressions: a statement that consists of numbers, variables and operations

Firewall: a security system consisting of a combination of hardware and software that limits the exposure of a computer or computer network to attack

Functions: a self-contained set of instructions (algorithms) for performing a specific task within a program, examples include mathematical formulas: SUM, AVERAGE, PAYMENT, COUNT, MINimum, MAXimum, etc.

GPS: a navigational satellite system that provides geolocation and time information to receiver anywhere on or near earth.

Hard Drive: the primary storage component, chip, of a computer which stores all software, data, documents, and other files are stored.

Hardware: physical parts of the computer

Input: data entered into the computer

Internet: a computer network consisting of a worldwide network of computer networks that use the TCP/IP network protocols to facilitate data transmission and exchange

Intranet: a network designed for the exclusive use of computer users within an organization that cannot be accessed by users outside the organization

IP address: The numerical address of a computer on the Internet ad defined by the Internet Protocol(IP).

Keyboard: an input device with keys: used to enter data

LAN: a local computer network for communication between computers

Looping: repeating a block of statements or code numerous times.

Monitor: the TV-like screen, an output device

Motherboard: the computer's main circuit board that holds, the CPU, memory, connections for the hard drive and optical drives, etc.

Mouse: a hand held input device

OS: Operating system, master control program in a computer, maintains disk files, runs applications, and handles devices such as the mouse and printer

Output: data processed by the computer

PAN: Personal Area Network

Plagiarism: the unethical act of representing a published author's work as your own

Port: the place on a computer where cable can be attached

Printer: an output device used to print on paper (Ex: Laser Printer, Ink Jet Printer)

Printout: output from a printer (Ex: Laser, Dot Matrix, Ink Jet)

RAM: random access memory; temporary memory. RAM is expandable, and resides on the motherboard.

Ribbon: an area at the top of an office program window that contains commands for working with the open file; the commands are organized under tabs.

ROM: read only memory whose contents can be accessed and read but cannot be changed

Router: a computing device that connects networks and exchanges data between them

Server: a computer that provides networked computers access to files and printers as shared resources

Software: instructions on a disk that make the computer work (tells the computer what to do)

Spam: unwanted e-mail (usually of a commercial nature sent out in bulk)

Speaker: output device that produces sound (softcopy)

Spreadsheet: a grid of rows and columns in which you enter text, numbers, and the results of calculations.(excel)

Tab: an organizational element of the ribbon that displays related groups of buttons.

Thumbnails: A miniature computer graphic or a reduced image of a graphic or document page, used to view multiple which is usually hyperlinked to a full-size version.

URL: uniform resource locator, also called a web address

Variable: a symbol used to represent a quantity that can change, a factor that can change

Viruses: A program that secretly attaches itself to a document or program, and then executes when document is opened or program is launched.

WAN: a computer network that spans a wider area than does a local area network(LAN)

Wireless: a communication system based on broadcasting electromagnetic waves

WWW: World Wide Web; a system of interlinked hypertext documents contained on the Internet
